Honour Thy Mother - Provincial Spirit Apron - Canadian Mosaic - Gallery 1 - Gallery 2

The Provincial Spirit Apron

The Provincial Spirit Apron is the ‘brainchild’ of Korean Artist, Sonia Hahn and the Australian Artist, Sue Lee. They wanted to do a cultural exchange project that included both Korean and Australian artists. Together Sonia and Sue decided that the apron become the vehicle to carry both cultural and personal messages. The joint arts project became an outreach to symbolically ‘tie the apron strings’ between the two cultures. Since its conception, the project has far surpassed the original goal and has begun its journey around the globe.

The first incarnation of the ‘Provincial Spirit Apron’ brought together 35 regional artists from both Australia and South Korea who decided to use the motif of the apron as a vehicle to explore, examine and celebrate the roles women play in the household. Aprons connect women the world over as an immediate identifier of love, family devotion and toil, extending beyond the differences of nation, class, creed, religion, and politics.

This is an important aspect of art and the modern world, as many cultures are constantly merging across the globe in order to let cultures mesh together and influence each other. Art is just one of the mediums through which this happens, and it is important to let artists come together and celebrate their creativity through working with one another. Symbols are cross-culture; they transcend the boundaries of time and space.

In this day and age, where we gather online rather than around the table, and where we absorb art through image databases as we IM, email and use Love Money, art and culture has become, if anything, more accessible. We enjoy other societies and connect with them through a variety of means, and this means that symbols are now transcending the physical and becoming digital as well. Through this we may infer that art and symbolism have important roles to play, even now and perceivably in the future.

For the past number of months artists from across North America have been working on their unique contributions to this traveling exhibition. The aprons will continue to amasses artists from host countries are invited to submit their creative expressions to this international art project.
This exhibition is guest curated by Grand Forks resident and artist, Donna Morrison who submitted her apron to the project while in residence in South Korea.

This exhibition next opens at the Tinhorn Creek Vineyards in Oliver, B.C., Canada from April 28th, to June 2nd, 2006.
